Understanding Health Insurance and Therapy Services

We understand that many clients are interested in using their health insurance to help cover the cost of therapy services. This can be a great way to manage expenses, but it’s also important to be fully informed about how using insurance for therapy may impact you.

At Westchester Relationship Center, we want you to have all the information you need to make the best choice for yourself. That’s why we’ve put together an overview of the potential benefits and considerations of using health insurance for therapy.

The Benefits

Lower Out-of-Pocket Costs: With insurance, you may only need to pay your co-pay for each session, which could make therapy more affordable.

Deductible Contributions: Payments for therapy sessions may count toward your insurance deductible, helping you meet it sooner.

Things to Consider

Diagnosis Requirement: Insurance companies require a formal mental health diagnosis to approve and cover services. This diagnosis will become part of your permanent medical record.

Session Limitations: Your insurance provider determines whether therapy is “medically necessary” based on your diagnosis. They may limit or deny the number of sessions they will cover.

Coverage Restrictions: Not all diagnoses are covered by insurance, which means your claim could be denied, leaving you responsible for the full cost of sessions.

Delayed Approvals: It may take weeks for your insurance provider to confirm coverage. If denied, you would need to pay the full session cost.

Privacy Considerations: Insurance companies can request access to your therapy records or treatment plans at any time, which therapists are obligated to provide.

High Deductibles: If your plan has a high deductible, you may still need to pay the full session cost until your deductible is met. Deductibles generally reset at the start of each new calendar year.

We’re here to support you in understanding your options and choosing what’s right for you. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

Westchester Relationship Center is currently In-Network with Aetna, Cigna and Northwell Direct.

We also work with Out-of-Network benefits for several providers such as NYSHIP, Beacon, Carelon, MagnaCare and GHI/Emblem, and BCBS. Please check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:

•Do I have benefits for outpatient mental health in an office setting?
•Is my plan subject to a deductible or a copayment?

•If there is a deductible, how much of it has been met?

•How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
